Yesterday, Trump walked back his plan to impose tariffs on Canadian goods heading to the U.S. While several factors played a role, one stood out: American small business owners spoke up. They made sure their voices were heard, and in the end, Trump listened—not because of political maneuvering, but because he understood the impact on his own economy and reputation.
This is a powerful reminder: You have a voice.
In Canada, there are 1.22 million businesses—and 1.19 million of them are small. You cannot underestimate the power of collective action. When we work together, we drive the economy, provide jobs, and shape the future. Just like voting, participation matters.
If you want results, you need to be engaged.

Just as voting is essential in a democracy, active participation is vital in the business community. To effect change and protect our interests, consider the following actions:
- Participate in Surveys and Meetings: Engage with your local Chamber of Commerce by responding to surveys and attending meetings. Your insights can shape policies that directly affect your business. The Canadian Chamber of Commerce offers resources and events that can amplify your voice. Check in with your own local chamber to see what they are up to.
- Connect Across Provinces: Expand your network beyond local boundaries. For instance, if you’re a business owner in British Columbia, reach out to counterparts in Quebec. Sharing experiences and strategies can lead to innovative solutions and a stronger national business community.

Leverage Trade Associations
Trade associations play a pivotal role in representing and advocating for industry-specific interests. Here are a few notable ones:
- Food Industry: The Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers (CFIG)supports independent, franchised, and specialty grocers, helping them achieve sustainable success.
- Farming Sector: The Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA) is Canada’s largest general farm organization, representing 200,000 farmers and farm families. They work to unify the voice of Canadian agriculture.
- Retail Sector: The Retail Council of Canada represents over 45,000 independent, regional, national mass, and specialty retailers in general merchandise, drug, and grocery sectors.
The Power of Listening
This recent tariff situation also prompts introspection: How well are we listening?
- To Employees: Are we attentive to their ideas and concerns? Employees often provide valuable insights that can drive innovation and improve operations.
- To Customers: Understanding customer needs and preferences is crucial. Regular feedback can inform product development and enhance customer satisfaction.
After basic necessities like food and water, humans have a fundamental need to be seen, heard, and understood. Great business leaders harness the power of active listening to foster trust, loyalty, and growth.

Take Action
This week, challenge yourself to:
